Hearty Old Fashioned Grandma Style Pea Soup

Hearty Old Fashioned Grandma Style Pea SoupGot a request for my pea soup recipe, gonna make it tomorrow, but here is my recipe!

You will need:

  • 1 package 16 ounces dried green split peas
  • 1 meaty ham bone
  • 2 bay leaf
  • 1 cup chopped carrot
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup onion, chopped
  • 1 cup celery chopped
  • 5 garlic cloves chopped
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 Yukon Gold potatoes, unpeeled, cubed
  • 2 sprigs thyme
  • 3 qts of water

Directions:

  1. Rinse the peas well in cold water.
  2. In a large pot or Dutch oven add the olive oil and sauté the onion, garlic, celery, carrots, potatoes with 1 tsp salt and pepper for 10 minutes.
  3. Add the peas, ham bone, bay leaves thyme and 3 quarts of water. Bring this to a boil and then lower the heat to a simmer and allow this to simmer covered for 2 hours until the peas are done.
  4. Remove the ham bone, thyme and bay leaves. Chop the ham off the none and add back to soup.
  5. Taste for salt and pepper.
